Cortisol Affects Fertility - In a Bad way!
Cortisol, often termed the "stress hormone," impacts fertility by disrupting the delicate hormonal communication between the brain and reproductive organs. When chronically elevated, cortisol can suppress the secretion of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which in turn reduces levels of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This disruption can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, delayed or absent ovulation (anovulation), and diminished egg quality. Furthermore, high cortisol levels can negatively affect the uterine environment by reducing progesterone availability and thinning the endometrial lining, which may hinder successful embryo implantation. In men, elevated cortisol can similarly lower testosterone production, resulting in decreased sperm count, motility, and overall quality. Essentially, the body prioritizes survival over reproduction during periods of high stress, often halting non-essential functions like conception until a baseline of homeostasis is restored.
