Can Your Immune System be Responsible for Fertility Challenges or Recurrent Miscarriage?

The immune system normally helps protect the body from infection while also adapting during pregnancy so that an embryo can implant and develop safely. In some women, however, the immune response may become overly active, poorly regulated, or autoimmune, creating inflammation or immune reactions that can interfere with implantation, placental development, or the body's ability to maintain a pregnancy. Researchers have investigated factors such as abnormal immune-cell activity, inflammatory cytokines, autoantibodies, and autoimmune disorders as possible contributors to recurrent pregnancy loss, although immune causes are complex and not responsible for every case. In patients with otherwise unexplained infertility or repeated miscarriages, a reproductive specialist may therefore consider whether an underlying autoimmune or inflammatory condition warrants further evaluation.
