Chronic inflammation can impair fertility in both women and men by creating an environment that disrupts normal reproductive function. In women, excessive inflammation may interfere with ovarian function, egg quality, ovulation, endometrial receptivity, implantation, and early pregnancy development. It is also associated with conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome. In men, inflammation can increase oxidative stress within the reproductive tract, potentially damaging sperm membranes and DNA while reducing sperm concentration, motility, and normal morphology. Identifying and addressing underlying sources of inflammation—such as infection, metabolic dysfunction, autoimmune activity, poor nutrition, smoking, or chronic stress—may therefore be an important part of a comprehensive fertility evaluation and treatment plan.
